Ultrasound evaluation of thyroid volume changes in Pregnancy and non gravid controls in Nepalese population
Objective: To study the changes in thyroid volume in different trimester of pregnancy and establish local reference range of thyroid volume in non gravid female
Materials and methods: A total of 155 volunteers including 30 controls and 125 pregnant ladies in different trimester of pregnancy underwent thyroid scan to calculate the volume which was obtained by measuring three dimension (craniocaudal, anteroposterior and transverse diameter) of the both lobes of thyroid gland. Subjects with known thyroid disease or any sonological abnormality of thyroid were excluded from study. The data were analyzed using One way ANNOVA in SPSS 26.
Results: The mean thyroid volumes ± standard deviation in study were 5.3± 1.4cc, 6.4±1.3cc, 7.3±1.6cc for first, second and third trimester respectively whereas the mean for control group was 3.9±1.4cc. The volumes were found to be increased as pregnancy advanced and the difference was statistically significant between the groups (p=0.00).
Conclusion: Knowing the normal range of thyroid volume in different trimester of pregnancy and control, the physiological increase in volume will help in differentiating it from other pathologies and help in daily clinical practice.
